Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy
When integrated into psychotherapy, mindfulness and meditation allow for a deepening of self-awareness and the cultivation of important meta-skills such as psychological flexibility and presence. I work with clients from various spiritual, religious, and secular backgrounds to develop and mature their meditation and contemplative practices. My understanding of meditation is grounded in the Zen tradition, which itself serves as the theoretical foundation of the modern mindfulness movement (i.e. Headspace, Waking Up, MBSR). Many of my clients have had previous experiences with mindfulness or meditation through apps or informal instruction but found that these practices did not ‘stick’ or deepen into stable daily practices. I work with clients to develop mature meditation practices grounded in understanding and wisdom. Other perspectives that inform my approach include Jungian Psychology, Eastern philosophy (Sufism, Taoism, Vedanta) and Ancient Greek philosophy (Stoicism & Platonism).
